It rides piggy-back on the starter.
Yes, the solenoid is located on top of the starter motor.
where is the starter located on a 1998 Nissan sentra
The EVAP purge solenoid on a 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE is under the hood. It is mounted to the top of the intake manifold.
can a starter be removed from the top on a 98 Nissan sentra gxe
If it is anything like my 1991 Nissan Sentra (and it probably is), the solenoid is actually attached to the top of the starter. The starter is located underneath the car, attached just below the engine block but on top the transaxle (where the transmission connects with the axle) it is very difficult to get to, on mine I had to remove the air-intake manifold and a few mounting brackets below the car.
Just buy a rebuilt starter from Auto Zone. They're around $100.
The starter relay, solenoid or starter itself most likely is bad. If you hear clicking from the starter when you turn the key, then the starter is most likely the cause.
replace the starter
It's by the flywheel housing.
