There is a high probability that this will be the United states ultimate fate. While the US is Not Rome and vice-versa, they do seem to share some key attributes. For Rome the burden of maintaining a vast and costly military, along with an increasingly corrupt and ineffective bureaucracy, became too heavy a burden for the empire and it citizens to shoulder. The only way out of the complexity trap, was a dramatic and sudden decrease in societal complexity. We of course, know the result as the Dark Ages. The US, also is a heavily militarized society that views all its problems(and there solutions) through a military lens. In the United states, now, as in Rome, its ordinary citizens are being increasingly forced to bear the costs of empire directly. Inflation, a permanent war-economy, increasing unemployment, a corrupt and weak government, a vast surveillance state, all point towards to a American empire in decline.
