Well, it depends upon what crowd you associate with, I guess. In my family, the violin is very popular and quite an instrument to play. My parents have always fostered a love for music, and my sister has taken up the violin. I myself play guitar and piano, and I think violins had a lot to the music I play.
Whether or not they're popular as a whole, I am not entirely sure. But, I can say that I know a lot of bands, even rock bands, that utilize violins, so I am quite sure they are not being used just for Classical Music anymore.
It became popular during the baroque era until present times.

The musical instrument isn't that popular compared to the violin. In most places musicians start of by playing the violin and then learn the viola afterwards. Violas don't often get the tune in orchestral pieces and therefore many people choose the violin over it. However the viola is becoming more popular and composers are starting to use it more often due to its deep, rich tone.
Some popular songs that feature violin chords include "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson, "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles, and "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve.
Country songs have many instruments. Fiddles are very popular in country songs. Acoustic guitars are also popular in country songs. Guitar, cello, & violin. Guitar, cello, & violin.
