However, the primary reason for the growth of religious violence comes out of the Islamic World and is a result of the decline of secular regimes in the Islamic World and the Rise of Islamism, which is a modern incarnation of Islamic Theocracy. Without the massive financial and military support given by both the US and the Soviet Union to secular dictatorial regimes in the Cold War, many of these dictators have been forced (by popular revolt due to failing economies) to either abdicate, concede more power to the Islamists, or face civil war. In this turmoil, Jihadists (Islamists who use violence and terrorism to achieve their aims) have found a far greater ability to operate.
