Using RMS values instead of peak values or peak to peak values allows us to assess the true power, voltage or current being transferred.

Lets suppose, we have a square wave that peaks right before the wave falls, that means the whole time while the peak had not been reached, optimal levels of performance at the load end had not been acheived since the optimal levels of current or voltage was not provided.

Now instead of using peak values, if we took root mean squared values(values that are the average of the values of current throughout the cycle) we can assess the true value of the power being transmitted and hence make critical decisions based on this information more effectively.

Hope this answers your query.

Household supply of 230volts is rms value or maximum value of voltage?

When you say holdhold supply of 230volts, you are referring to the RMS value, not the peak value.

Is the voltage rating on a light bulb the rms value or peak value?

It's the RMS value. A 120 volt lamp (light bulb) is rated according to its RMS voltage. Just like appliances in the home are rated at 120 volts (like your fridge, microwave and toaster), or 220 volts (like your clothes dryer). Note that these appliances will have to stand up to the peak voltage on the AC line. Naturally. And the peak voltage on an AC line is 1.414 times the RMS value of voltage. That means in a 120 volt AC line (120 volts RMS), the peak value of the voltage will be 1.414 times the 120 volts, or right at about 170 voltspeak for each cycle.

What does Uo stand for?

U0 stands for the nominal rms-value of the line potential measured with respect to earth.

Which has a higher RMS value given a sine wave a square wave and a sawtooth wave?

A square wave has the highest RMS value. RMS value is simply root-mean-square, and since the square wave spends all of its time at one or the other peak value, then the RMS value is simply the peak value. If you want to quantify the RMS value of other waveforms, then you need to take the RMS of a series of equally spaced samples. You can use calculus to do this, or, for certain waveforms, you can use Cartwright, Kenneth V. 2007. In summary, the RMS value of a square wave of peak value a is a; the RMS value of a sine wave of peak value a is a divided by square root of 2; and the RMS value of a sawtooth wave of peak value a is a divided by cube root of 3; so, in order of decreasing RMS value, you have the square wave, the sine wave, and the sawtooth wave. What do you mean by rms value of current and voltage?

From Wikipedia:"In mathematics, the root mean square (abbreviated RMS or rms), also known as the quadratic mean, is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity. It is especially useful when variates are positive and negative, e.g., sinusoids."Since AC voltage is a sinusoid, the RMS voltage is one measure of the amount of voltage. It is also measured as a peak-to-peak value. Since Current = Voltage divided by Resistance, the same RMS measurement approach applies.

Is utility voltage ie 110 VAC given as a RMS value or as a Peak value?

All AC voltages and currents are expressed as rms values, unless otherwise specified. So 120 V AC is an rms value.

Why you consider only rms value of voltages and currents in ac circuits?

RMS is most commonly used measurement for AC because the power calculated from it matches the power calculated from DC and is the true power, if there is no phase shift. Its not the only measurement, just the most generally useful. Other measurements are still useful for purposes other than power calculation.

Why do we need exactly one cycle data for computing the RMS value?

You don't need exactly one cycle data for computing the RMS value. It is just a convenient normalization. 1 cycle = 1Hz. RMS values can also be specified in 1 Mcycle, 1kcycle, even 2.39384kcycles. Again, 1 cycle is simply convenient. In other words, if the RMS value were specified in MHz, the RMS value will be 20*log(MHz/Hz) higher.
