Is there a common theme in the 5 books of the Torah?

There are many themes, but one common theme is that God created the world and continues to be involved in the world after creation and throughout history (as evidenced by God's taking the Jewish people out of Egyptian bondage). The whole Torah is very much focused on the description of how the Jewish people came about and were chosen to bring God's message to the world by keeping His commandments and statutes. Furthermore, the ideal place in which this message can be carried forth is in the Land of Israel.

From my perspective, the most common theme in the Torah is that no matter how many times a person makes a mistake, they can always work to correct their mistakes and become a better person and therefore closer to God.

The entire social milieu portrayed in the Torah, once criticized as anachronistic, has been shown to be historically accurate, including customs of marriage, adoption, contracts, inheritance, purchases, utensils, modes of travel, people's names and titles, etc. Professor Gleason Archer Ph.D of Harvard University states: "In case after case where historical inaccuracy was alleged as proof of late and spurious authorship of the biblical documents, the Hebrew record has been vindicated by the results of excavations, and the condemnatory judgment of the theorists have been proved to be without foundation."

This belief justified fabulous stories about genocide that would be considered war crimes if not sanctioned by God, and the conquest of the ancestral territory of the Canaanites. Fortunately, archaeologists and scholars tell us that the savage conquest of Canaan, with its accompanying genocide, never occurred.
