it depends on the manufacture of the emulsion, the power and type of lighting, the mesh count on the screen and the type of transparency being used. some emulsion suppliers will provide some help with the times, some will not. trial and error works. find your baseline and go from there. the coarser the mesh count, the longer the screen will need exposed. if the entire emulsion coating is washing out, go longer. if the image is not washing out, go less and make sure your transparency is DARK! if the mesh is dyed a color other than white, add 10% to time for the same mesh count in white.

this is just the start of the frustration. good luck. You can supposedly make this out of potassium dichromate and Elmer's glue. I've worked with potassium dichromate, though. It's not something I would want anyone to do--this is a very dangerous, toxic, carcinogenic chemical that will give you a case of dermatitis that won't go away. Some things you just need to buy.

What is the name of the dots used in photo journalism?

Oddly enough, they're just called "dots," and are part of what's commonly known as a "halftone screen." The number of dots per inch determines the resolution of the printed halftone photo (the more dots, the sharper the picture -- 150 dpi allows for much finer detail resolution than 72 dpi). The reason this effect was required is that offset printing is not capable of reproducing shades or gradations of tone -- there's either ink on the paper or not. Reducing a continuous tone photo to a series of dots allows it to be reproduced on a printing press. Without the dot structure, the press would simply print a blotch of ink. Traditionally the halftone was achieved by laying a reusable, semi-transparent screen of the desired frequency (number of dots per inch) over high-contrast photographic paper on an enlarger (or by a similar process on a "line camera," but that's a whole 'nother topic). Bright areas of the picture were thus translated to small dots on the paper; darker areas comprised larger dots. Nowadays, most pre-press operations use scanners, computer graphics programs and digital output systems to produce halftones.

Does digital offset printing cost more than regular photo printing?

Usually, no. There's not a huge price difference in the cost of digital printing vs. photo printing, but the quality of photo printing is still higher. Digital printing involves printing tiny dots of color on paper to create an image while photo printing is done on photo paper where you don't see dots.

What is flatbed screen printing?

Flatbed screen printing, also known as flatbed silk screen printing, is a printing technique that involves using a flatbed screen printing machine to transfer ink onto flat or slightly curved surfaces. In this process, a screen made of fabric, usually silk or polyester, is stretched tightly over a frame. Areas of the screen that are not intended to be printed are blocked out with a stencil or emulsion, leaving open mesh areas through which ink can pass. Here's how flatbed screen printing typically works: Preparation: The item to be printed, such as paper, fabric, plastic, metal, or glass, is placed flat on the printing bed of the flatbed screen printing machine. Ink Application: Ink is poured onto the screen, usually near one end of the frame. A squeegee is then used to spread the ink evenly across the surface of the screen, forcing the ink through the open mesh areas and onto the substrate below. Printing: The screen is lowered onto the surface of the substrate, with the inked mesh in direct contact with the material. Pressure is applied to the screen using a squeegee or a pneumatic mechanism, forcing the ink through the mesh and onto the substrate in the desired pattern or design. Curing: After printing, the ink is typically dried or cured using heat, UV light, or other methods to ensure that it adheres properly to the substrate and becomes permanent. Flatbed screen printing is commonly used for printing on a wide range of materials, including paper, cardboard, textiles, plastics, metals, glass, and ceramics. It is widely used in industries such as packaging, signage, textiles, electronics, automotive, and promotional products for producing high-quality, durable prints with vibrant colors and precise details.

Difference of silk screen printing and photographic screen printing?

Screen printing is a printing process that uses a stencil embedded in a fabric stretched tightly on a frame. The stencil controls what prints and what doesn't print. Stencils can be made in many ways. The use of photosensitive emulsions and opaque film materials to create printable images on the screen mesh would be "photo silkscreen." Another way to make a stencil is simply to cut a design in a sheet of paper and attach it to the back of a screen with tape. The openings in the paper alow ink to pass through. This would be called a "paper stencil."
