The rarity of the Navy Cross awarded in the Vietnam War means that a complete file may soon be ready for pubication, but this document is still riddleded with potential errors. For Historians to compile lists that meet the rigorous mandates of academic research are very nigh impossible. Accurate killed, wounded, died of wounds, missing and presumed dead, missing, prisoners of war, died while a prisoner and died of non hostile action are always suspect. Modern technology allows more accurate battefield reporting. Wars and conflicts now involve smaller numbers compared to the Great War, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and war statistics are improving. Lists indicating awards and entitlement for an award are far more accurate for actions today then they have ever been.
Ask the DoD how many atomic bombs they have and the answer will be enough, or that's classified or we don't know. Ask the Air Force how many aircraft they own and the answer is surely close within 25 percent.
The numbers can be fudged and in Vietnam they often were. Some that won the "heart" lost their limbs or their eyes or their lives. No list exists. Bless them all/

∙ 14y agoNo list exists. The Vietnam War lasted 10,000 days, and involved over one million US Military personnel. Purple Heart medal awards were awarded for combat wounds or death in combat. Given the numbers, thousands, if not tens of thousands were awarded.
