Research shows that you can go a few mph over the limit without being caught by a speed camera. For instance, if the limit is 35mph and you are driving at 37mph you would get away with it. You can get away with being around 1-4% over the limit which, although isn't that much, is better than being caught for going 1mph faster than the limit.

Who invented the gatso?

Maurice ("Maus") Gatsonides (1911-02-14-1998-11-29) was a Dutch rally driver and inventor. Gatsonides was born in Gombong on the island Java in the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). He founded the company "Gatsometer BV" in 1958. Today, Gatsonides' fame largely results from inventing the Gatso speed camera, a speed measuring device used today by many police forces around the world to reliably catch drivers who are speeding. He originally invented the Gatso speed camera to measure his cornering speed in an attempt to improve his driving.

How does the truvelo speed camera work?

The Truvelo is a forward facing camera that utilises similar technology to the Gatso - By laying virtual loops in the road ahead of the camera, a trigger is used to take a photograph when the speed limit is exceeded or the "virtual" loop is broken.Picture the camera projecting a set of lines on the road - The time it takes to break the first line before the second line is broken determines whether the speed limit is being broken.

Why did maurice gatsonides invent the gatso?

Because he was curious about his own speed, as a rally driver ;-)

When were speed cameras invented?

They were invented in the 1950s by Maurice Gatsonides. He was a Dutch racing car (rally) driver who invented the camera so he could check his cornering during races. It was later adopted by police forces around the world. His company, Gatsometer BV, founded in 1958 made and sold the device, called a "Gatso".

How do speed cameras work?

There are several different designs and systems depending on the manufacturer of the device, but a basic type operates by timer. Once the light turns red it activates the camera mechanism and anything that passes through the camera's field of view triggers the camera to take a picture. Other more sophislticated types work on the same principle as radar. When a vehicle crosses its field of view after the light turns red, it triggers the camera.

How do GATSOS work?

GATSO`S are speed cameras and red light jumper cameras. They look on the road and if they spot a car speeding it catches their number plate and the driver recieves a ticket in about 2 weeks which is a fine for about £60. They are Also for red light jumpers (They are silver and look like speed cameras) They can see the traffic light and what colour it is and if it finds a driver who passes the lights when it is red they catch their number plate and they recieve a ticket in about 2 weeks which is a fine for about £60. A Little Tip Most people think that if they cover there number plate with something, such as wax, the cameras will not be able to read there number plate. Well they are wrong!!! Both cameras have an infar red in them which means they can look through anything on your number plate and find your number plate. And you would probably get even more points on your license because covering your number plate with something is illegal!! So do not speed or run the red!!!! And also if you come to a red light jumper camera do not try to drive fast through a red light, because the Gatso can get your number plate from really far away!!! You would usually get a ticket from a red light jumper camera if you passed the line after about 1 or 2 seconds of the light being red!!!

Gatso flash how does gatso work?

It sends out a radar beam which bounces back from a passing vehicle measured over a set time and distance. If the radar is placed wrongly, for instance on a bend in the road, or used from inside a vehicle it may give incorrect results. The Home Office has approved the Gatso Type 24 for use in both fixed and mobile uses each of which has a Schedule of Conditions to its Type Approval which must be met in order for the information from the device to be able to be used as evidence of an offence. The above Type Approval is for the UK speed enforcement only. Other countries may have similar approval requirements Also for the UK, once a device has recorded an alleged speeding offence the Registered Keeper (RK) must receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) asking for details of the driver of the vehicle at that time and place. Any late service of this NIP still requires the RK still has to complete the information but any penalty for speeding is invalidated due to late service of the NIP. Once the police are informed of the driver details they can then either issue a Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, usually 3 points on the drivers license plus a fine of £60, or if the police consider the speed was excessively above the limit they can issue a summons to appear in court. In cases where the speed was only slightly over the limit they may also offer the driver the option of attending a Speed Awareness Course. This entails a day on a course at some sort of cost (usually around £90) but doesn't result in any points being put onto the drivers licence. Any speeding summons must be laid before the court before the expiry of 6 months from the date of the offence otherwise they cannot prosecute due to time-out. Return of the NIP has to be made within 28 days of service giving the details required. Failure to do this will result in the RK being prosecuted for the offence of not giving the driver details. The only defence against this summons is that the RK has used Due Diligence in trying to find out who the driver was and can prove this to the satisfaction of the court. It must be borne in mind that a simple, "I don't know who was driving will not suffice". Any summons for failing to identify the driver is required to be laid before the court before the expiry of 6 months from the expiry of the 28 days given to identify the driver, ie usually within 7 months of the date of the alleged speeding offence. Failure to lay information for the offence before the end of this time renders the police incapable of prosecutiong for the offence.
