There are many carriers offering a pay as you go service. Contracts and terms vary carrier to carrier. Here is a short condensed list of carrier programs. AT&T: GoPhone T-Mobile: ToGo Verizon: InPulse Pay as You Go Virgin Mobile
This is a prepaid cell phone plan that you can add minutes to as time goes on. It's a terrific value for those who don't use cell phones constantly and don't want to keep paying that annoying monthly charge of $30+ for a cell phone that is used very seldom or only for emergencies. I have one of these because I use a cell phone no more than maybe 20 minutes in a year. I have the phone model Motorola C139 and my carrier is AT&T/Cingular. The phone has text messaging, voice mail, call forwarding, adjustable volumes, address book, 1-touch dialing, a color display and is a small compact size. The phone itself costs anywhere from nothing to $39 depending on what kind of plan is purchased. The most economical over time is to get a $100 time plan and that is good for a year, charge is 25 cents a minute flat rate. No long distance charges, no roaming charges. Just 25 cents a minute flat. Like most plans, of course text messaging costs as do calls to Information 411. But overall, for people who don't use cell phones a lot, this is the cheapest deal. There are plans available that cost $25, $50 and $75 but those expire in 90 days and have to refilled at that time so it's easy to see that the $100 plan for a year is a good way to go. Time not used up carries over into the next refill period. I'm in my 2nd year of this plan and I love it. The phones and plans can be purchased at a lot of places but I recommend going to a AT&T/Cingular store because they know what they're doing and they activate it free. I almost bought it at Radio Shack but the clerk didn't have a clue about activating it so I nixed the purchase. This particular plan is called GoPhone.
Pay as you go cell phones allow you to purchase minutes as you need them without an annual contract or specific number of minutes per month. They are pre-paid cell phones that you can buy at Walmart or any store selling electronics. You can also check Walmart on line at http://www.walmart.com/browse/Cell-Phones/No-Contract-Phones-Plans/Prepaid-Cell-Phones/_/N-9709?fromPageCatId=3944&ic=48_0&path=0%3A3944&ref=+428985&refineresult=true&tab_value=Online&catNavId=1072335 to see what's available.
Pay as you go cell phones are part of a different class these days. Instead of basic models, many prepaid phones are top of the line cell phones with large touchscreens, a fast processor, and a high pixel camera. While the initial cost of the phone may be higher than with a post-paid contract, the low monthly costs quickly make the pay as you go phone a better option.
Not everyone is enamored with the cell phones that come with a pricey contract. Sometimes a phone just needs to be a phone that can be used to call people. Having a plan that allows you to add minutes when you need them adds convenience and flexibility to the plan. It can also limit how many minutes that the kids use and prevent a surprise phone bill at the end of the month.
As far as I am aware, no, there is no such thing as a 3G pay as you go phone. Usually because pay as you go users do not use data, whereas 3G users do use data.
no only on cantract with O2 (sorry)
