The Amish rarely participate in politics.

Mark Souder, who attends Emmanuel Community Church, part of Church the United Brethren in Christ. The Brethern are not a plain sect, but they are an anabaptist group closely related to the plain. He had to get permission from his church to seek political office, and it was not given easily. Had he not established a sparkling reputation as operator of Souder's, a family-owned general store featuring premium furniture before a regional recession forced it out of business, he likely would have been denied permission.

And when George W, Bush met with Amish workers of a Lancaster County business to solicit their support as a presidential candidate, the move occupied the interest of the Lancaster New Era newspaper, with some national attention as well, because the Amish typically do not even register to vote, taking it as an extension of the injunction against suing, or even testifying at trial. (The Amish are going to court increasingly to protect their first-amendment rights, an act that is still uncommon all these many years after the Yoder case in the Supreme Court.)

A further reason there are no Amish mayors is that it's a municipal office, and most cities do not allow the keeping of horses, and will not allow the occupancy of houses that are not wired for electricity and plumbed for municipal water, effectively prohibiting the Amish from living within the city. That's undoubtedly unconstitutional, but the Amish have little reason to desire city life.
