Get an O ring lubricant this is available in plumbers supply stores. pool shops automotive spares dealers. I find a bit of Vaseline or other petroleum jelly work quite well also.
i believe you trouble is ..........sand...you have to get every little piece of sand off the o-ring and the groove...good luck Also make sure you are using approved Lube. Vaseline can cause a ring to loose its form and cause leaks. There is also the possibility that the lid is warped from age.

You can lubricate O-rings by hand. Just make sure you use the correct type of rubber lubricant that is compatible with the O-ring material and what you are trying to seal. Michael Chou Mechanical Engineer http://mykin.com
NO you do not. That is what the o-ring is for. If you use sealer it will wind up in the oil and that is Not good.
Ring a Ring o' Roses was created in 1881.
'O' refers not to the shape of the ring but to the ring's cross-section.

Depends on what type of o-ring it is.
2000 BLAZER FRONT WHEEL HUB INSTALLATION, WHERE DOES THE LARGE O-RING GO? You can see the outer race of the wheel bearing is stepped. The large o-ring goes over the first step and buts up against the second. The o-ring may be slightly larger than the smaller diameter area on the outer race, fit a little loose, and be a little larger on outside diameter than the larger part of the bearing. The hub needs to be put in evenly. Tighten each bolt a flat at a time if you need to. The o-ring should lubed a little (I used Vaseline). As you tighten the bolts continue to check the o-ring to make sure one part isn't popping out the front or back. The o-ring should rest against the step in the knuckle which corresponds to the bearing. This is not a gasket for the dust shield.
Integy Seal O-Ring are very good. Hagen is okay though.
