many health benefits to a vegetarian diet; vegetarians have significantly lower rates of obesity, coronary Heart disease, hypertension, type II Diabetes, diet-related cancers, diverticulitis, constipation, and gall stones.
The protein found in meat can easily be obtained from many vegetarian sources, such as vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, tofu, or manufactured meat substitute products, such as Quorn (which make vegetarian mince, sausages etc.)
Iron supplements are also available, as well as supplements with B-vitamins. Meat is not strictly necessary in the diet.
It is, however, more difficult to source vitamin B-12 in a strict vegetarian (vegan) diet, so care must be taken. Overall, vegetarians tend to be healthier than meat-eaters.
I've read one study that says that when comparing vegetarians, vegans lived least long, followed by vegetarians who ate animal products, then people who called themselves vegetarians but occasionally ate meat.
I've also heard accounts where people stopped or prevented cancer by going vegan.
My personal story is that one year when I was not a vegetarian I got the flu 5 times. Tired of being sick, I complained to a vegan friend of mine who said that he rarely gets sick now that he is a vegan. I eliminated dairy products and meat from my diet, and never got sick.
Currently I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I get sick once a year perhaps (enough to stay home from work). My vegan friends seem to never get sick. One theory is that dairy products are mucus forming, and perhaps if I eliminated them I could reduce my colds/flus.
My children were very healthy when they were vegetarian. When I split with their dad, he started feeding them meat and they do get sick much more often. Slaughterhouses are probably not the healthiest places to obtain your food!
It's more healthy than not eating. It is difficult to compare to an omnivorous diet because both range so much. Chances are it'd be more healthy since vegans need to be so aware of ingredients. Though Oreos are vegan. If you ate those all day you might not be so healthy.
In my personal experience I've been healthier as a vegan. I cook more often and haven't had fast food in quite some time. My limited options are more healthy on average but an omnivore could be eating the same things but with milk, cheese, yogurt, meats or eggs. Eggs have anti-oxidants and protein in them. They're healthy, but candy bars aren't very healthy. Depends on the diet. Both have potential to be very healthy.
For the most part, yes. A study titled, Comparison of Nutritional Quality of the Vegan, Vegetarian, Semi-Vegetarian, Pesco-Vegetarian and Omnivorous Diet was published Mar 24, 2014. It concluded that the vegan died was the most healthy one.
The title can be as simple as "Why vegetarian diet is unhealthy". However, I personally don't think they are. A vegetarian can get a very balanced food daily and its a myth that non-vegetarian food is essential or better. I am myself a Vegan for more than 10 years and I know such people who are so for more than 30 years. All of us are very healthy, much better than most of the people around!
There is plenty of solid evidence. For example, a study titled, Comparison of Nutritional Quality of the Vegan, Vegetarian, Semi-Vegetarian, Pesco-Vegetarian and Omnivorous Diet was published Mar 24, 2014. It concluded that the vegan died was the most healthy one.
It depends on the specific type of vegetarian. The most common are pescatarian (fish), lacto- or ovo-vegetarian, vegetarian, and vegan. Some allow fish, eggs, and / or dairy. Vegetarian limits all meat and eggs. Vegan does not allow animal products of any kind (including honey, dairy, silk, leather, etc.).
I do not think so. I have not read that he is, and I think I would if he were. I disagree. I think that George and Dick Cheney have moved toward a plant based diet due to health reasons. George's face is a lot thinner and Dick Cheney has more than likely had to adapt to a vegan diet for health reasons with his new heart. Dick's physique has dramatically changed They are mum about this for political reasons. Yes, being a vegan or vegetarian is a politically loaded topic.
Probably not because I know my highschool didn't provide anything other than salads and PB and J. They didn't actually have vegetarian/vegan entrees. We pretty much had to fend for ourselves in that respect.Colleges may have to though. My school has a vegetarian entree for every meal sometimes it's vegan but sometimes not. They also have vegetarian meats and cheeses for the sandwich bar.Either way, if you are concerned about eating vegetarian at school, your best bet is to probably pack your lunch.
Many nutritionists believe that abstaining from red meat and having a vegetarian diet is better for one's health. In most cases, removing red meat from a person's diet is less expensive than a "regular" diet. The disadvantages of a vegetetarian diet are yet to be discoverd.
No, they're made of suede and have leather stripes on them. You can get hemp gazelles, which are vegan, but they've recently become even harder to find than they originally were!
Vegans are not necessarily better than other people. Some are healthier than other people, and some are not.
Tofutti makes a vegan ricotta called 'Better than Ricotta Cheese'. To make your own ricotta, click on the links below -
Lacto avo vegetarian- What most people are. Eggs and milk are allowed in the diet, but no meat. Lacto vegetarian- No eggs. No meat. Everything else is fine. Avo vegetarian- Eats eggs, but no meat or milk. Pescatarian- Technically not vegetarian, but a lot of pescatarians call themselves vegetarian. They can eat fish, eggs, and milk, but the rest of meat is out. Vegan- No meat or animal products. Honey is border-line.
There are so many more companies catering to vegetarian/specific dietary needs. Oatmeal and fruit is a great vegetarian way to start your day. Vegetarian meals are no harder to prepare than meaty meals.
You can be wealthy and not be healthy. The chance for better health care is better with more money, but to have health is better than having money so you can do many things.
