I'm not sure where you heard that, but wheat gluten isn't generally considered to be harmful. You may have this misconception because many product labels specify whether the package contains gluten or not, much like products advertise whether they carry trans fats in them, which are known to be bad. The reason for the gluten label, however, is for patients with Allergies to gluten or a medical condition known as celiac sprue.

Just for comparison, phenylalanine is another chemical that is often listed on food labels. This it to inform patients with phenylketonuria, who cannot process this amino acid.

addition:

Gluten do not belong in the "original" human diet as we used to be hunter/foragers. Our intestines do not tolerate gluten as well as other foods. They may even cause an increased permeability of the intestines

Correction. Celiac is NOT an"allergy". It's an autoimmune disease.

Only if you are allergic to it, or if it was the only food you ever ate. Wheat contains many important vitamins and minerals as well as protein and carbohydrates to give you energy. Whole grain foods can be a part of any healthy, varied diet when consumed in moderation, the same as most other foods.
