Original Schwinns will have the "(Schwinn) Chicago" mentioned in the logos, replicas won't, replica's will have a sprayed-on metallic paint with a superglossy finish, originals will have powdercoated frames with less gloss, replica's will have taiwanese crank & chain, originals will have BSA (British Sturmey Archer) crank & chain on the 3 speed models. Newer replicas will have poor quality steel rollerbrakes and alloy rims instead of chromed steel. Replica's will rust within a fortnight on chrome parts. replica's will have saddles with (injected) plastic undersides which appear soft and very dark in quality, originals will have a harder plastic with traces of lighter areas in the plastic itself where pressure has been applied (through being seated on), replica's will have thinner (size 14) stainless steel spokes, originals will have (zink protected) spokes of a less shiny nature. Replicas will have chinese & taiwanese fabricate nylon tires, not US or UK fabricated rubber like the originals.
Consider that 99% of all offered "krate" bikes are actually repros and replicas. The fact that originals are near impossible to find means it has become a lucrative market for fakes. A replica costs about 50,- to produce & import from Taiwan: so the 195,- that Wallmart was asking is a reasonable price for a new "krate" replica. Anything over 200 dollars (on Ebay) is pure theft, unless the originality of the bike can be proven it's a fake. Apart from that the original frame numbers are Schwinn registered. The fakes are not.
