The Dorians were a Greek-speaking people who took over most of southern Greece 3,000 years ago. They became known by the cities they established - Corinth, Sparta, Argos etc, and sent out colonies to Rhodes, Cos, Crete, Taranto, Syracuse, Crimea etc.
Many cities sent out colonies when their population exceeded the land capacity of the parent city. There were several hundred. And some of these colonies in turn outgrew the capacity of their land then also sent out colonies. Some well known ones are Athens (Miletus), Corinth (Corfu), Sparta (Taranto). However some colonies were set up by a consortium of cities anxious to get rid of a surplus and also get rid of potential problem-makers.
In 1941 there were no foreign troops in Italy. However, there was fighting between Italy and Britain in Greece, North Africa, in Ethiopia and at sea. (Battle of Matapan, for example, in March 1941). 1941 also saw the first air raids by the RAF (British Air Force) on Italy. On 11th November, a British carrier force struck the Italian fleet anchored in Taranto harbor on the southern end of Italy. This aerial attack pre-dated the attack of Pearl Harbor by 13 months.
Due to the long and narrow shape of the Italian peninsula, the are only two cities in Italy which are to the east of Rome: L' Aquila and Pescara. The other cities are either to its southeast or northeast. Due to the southeastward tilt of the Italian peninsula, there are only a few cities or provincial capitals to its northeast and a great many to its southeast. The the northeast of Rome there are only Chieti, Ascoli, Macerata, Ancona, Pesaro, Rimini. Trieste, Pordenone and Udine. Th the southeast of Rome, in the mainland, there are Frosinone, Teramo, Isernia, Campobasso, Caserta, Naples, ,Benevento, Avellino, Salerno, Potenza, Matera, Foggia, Bari, Brindisi, Lecce, Taranto, Cosenza, Crotone, Catanzarro, and Reggio Calabria. Pretty much the whole of Sicily, and all its nine provincial capitals are also the the southeast.
