The Pacific Ocean after leaving the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Strait of Gibraltar
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This meant that shipping could pass between the two oceans without risking the atrocious weather often found when passing Cape Horn, South America.
You can pass from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea by way of the Strait Of Gibraltar.
There is a hurricane season on both the Pacific and the Atlantic from June 1 trough November 30, each year. As such, there has been at least one tropical storm or hurricane passing trough Mexico every year for the last 100 years.
Sea level is about 20cm higher on the Pacific than the Atlantic. This is due to the water being less dense (less salty) on average on the Pacific side, and due to the prevailing weather and ocean conditions. At the isthmus that is known as Panama, however, we need to take into account the phase of the tides, as they are opposite to each other, i.e., when it's high tide on the Atlantic end of the Panama Canal, it's low tide on the Pacific end of the canal, and vice versa - one of the reason why "locks" are needed there. Such sea level differences are common across many short sections of land dividing ocean basins.
Jack sets the fire on Ralph to try and smoke him out of the forest so that he comes out onto the beach where the savages can kill him. Ironically the fire attracts the sailors passing by in their boat. This leads to the boys rescue.
The Panama Canal is composed of a series of waterways that include locks to let ships navigate the vertical difference between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean while passing between them. Each lock has a dam that can be opened and closed to allow ships into the next part of the lock or waterway.

It's known as the meridian of 180o longitude.
The Panama Canal does not surround Panama, rather, it bisects Panama. It travels from the Atlantic Ocean on the east side of Panama to the Pacific Ocean on the west side of Panama, passing through the middle of the country, so approximately half of Panama is north of the canal and half is south of the canal.
