Anzio The Italian commanders were in command of the battles in North Africa. Even after General Rommel arrived, he was under the authority of the Italians. It wasn't until 2 December 1941, that Hitler promoted Rommel and placed him in command of all the forces fighting in North Africa. Some of the Battles were: The Libyan Campaign 1940-41: Sidi Barrani, Bardia, Tobruk, Derna, Benghazi, El Afheila, El Alamein The Italian forces were used to defend Sicily, in July 1943, after the fall of North Africa. However, most of these troops were coastal artillery and infantry with old equipment. The Herman Goering Division and German forces under the command of German Gen. von Senger fought under the authority of the German high command (Commando Supremo) in Rome. After the fall of Sicily, the Italian government voted to surrender to the Allies. So the Italians did not fight the Allies after that except for units that supported the German forces.
