Best Answer
  • James Knox Polk was probably best known for being the President when the U.S. acquired the Mexican Cession and sole control of the Oregon Country south of the 49th parallel.
  • He was younger than any U.S. President before him and the first U.S. President under the age of 50 (49 years and 4 months when inaugurated). Since then there have been eight U.S. Presidents who were younger than he was: Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ulysses S. Grant, Barack Obama, Grover Cleveland, Franklin Pierce and James A. Garfield.
  • He was the first U.S. President to choose not to seek re-election to a second term. Promising not to was part of his campaign in 1844.
  • He was famously known as the Dark Horse President for being relatively unknown when elected.
  • He died sooner after leaving office than any U.S. President before or since who did not die in office (three months). He had the shortest life of any U.S. President who was not assassinated. At 53 years and 7 months of age, he was the first U.S. President to die before the age of 60 and only the third who died before the age of 70, after George Washington and William Henry Harrison.
  • He was the only non-Whig to serve between the first and last Whig Party Presidents (not counting John Tyler, who was kicked out of the party less than six months after taking office).
