Just rebuilt a 350 small block engine cranks but won't start gas shoots up from carb and smoke does as well engine backfired violently through carburetor how do you get it timed right so it fires?

Try setting timing to "TDC" No. 1 cylinder on compression stroke Make sure firing order is correct Should start at this point and then set timing from there
