The Hognose snake is a most unusual creature. It is not an aggressive animal. It is one of the few snakes that virtually will not bite in self defense.

The Hognose snake may also coil in a defensive posture with its head cocked in the ready position. The show gets truly amazing if you continue to harass, pin down, or even pick the creature up. The Hognose snake does not just "play dead" as it is known to do; it will give you an elaborate performance that would make a Hollywood actor blush.

It begins by turning on its back. In an instant it will twist its body a complete 180 degrees so that its entire underbelly is exposed. It does not stop there either. The snake then opens its mouth wide in a very unnatural manner, protrudes its tongue out its entire length and drapes it out to one side.

Even while being handled he will not break character. The snake will remain completely limp and will not move a muscle as long as he stays in his upside down position. If you flip the snake back right side up, he will flip instantly onto back again.
