Kiwi are not blind, but their vision is fairly poor. It is true that they hunt by smell, as their nostrils are located at the very end of their bill. They have an excellent sense of smell.
KIWI
Kiwi are nocturnal birds, meaning they hunt for food at night.
Kiwi are omnivorous, but they do eat some smaller creatures. They hunt earthworms, insect larvae and other invertebrates. They have been known to hunt and eat eels, freshwater crayfish, small lizards and even frogs. The kiwi is unique in having its nostrils located at the tip of the beak, and it has a very highly developed sense of smell, being able to smell out food beneath the surface of the ground. Turkey vulture. Their nostril are so developed that they make a hole right through the beak. Incorrect, the Turkey Vulture does not hunt, it scavenges off carion. Kiwi are nocturnal hunters which find their food in the native forests of New Zealand. They have also been forced to adapt to agricultural areas, as a result of habitat loss and land clearing. They do not use vision to help them hunt, as their eyesight is quite poor. Instead, they are unusual birds with their nostrils located at the tip of their beak, and they have a very highly developed sense of smell, being able to smell out food beneath the surface of the ground. Dogs have been introduced to New Zealand. Wild dogs hunt the kiwi for food, while unsupervised domestic dogs will run down and kill kiwi indiscriminately, as it is instinctive for many breeds to chase a moving target. Kiwi exude quite a strong smell, which attracts dogs. A single dog can wreak untold damage in one night, killing dozens of kiwi in a frenzied attack, all for the thrill of the chase.
