The movie "September Dawn" was based on a tragic historical event which is very hotly debated. The event is referred to as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. In September 1857, a pioneer wagon train was moving through southern Utah when they were attacked by either Native Americans, or Mormons dressed as Native Americans. All but 17 small children were killed.

The Church has condemed the act ever since it happened, and has no records regarding whether it was its own members, Native Americans, or both which comitted the crime. The Church did not attack or boycott the film, although Mormon historians argue that there are several blatant inaccuracies in the film. "September Dawn" was a flop in theatres.
