Lines of latitude are imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator and form part of a grid used to describe where on the earth you are. They are often called parallels.
The lines don't measure anything, any more than the marks on a ruler do any
measuring for you.
Latitude is an angle on the Earth's surface. It's the angle, measured north or south,
from the equator to whatever location you want to talk about. On a map or globe,
there may be some lines printed along the way, to help estimate the angle.
The five most important lines of latitude are the equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the arctic and antarctic circles.
There are 5 main lines of latitude. The Arctic circle, the Antarctic circle, the equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn

Lines of latitude and longitude are used to form a grid encompassing the globe so that any position can be identified and located. Latitude is used to measure distance north and south of the equator, while longitude is used to measure distance east and west of the prime meridian.
