There is no law that makes it illegal to criticize the president. Those freedoms are protected by the free speech clause of the first amendment. However, making threats against the president is illegal.

No that was the Sedition ActThe sedition acts made it illegal to publish anything negative about government and government officials. They still had freedom of speech. The act was repealed in 1801 anyway. So, we have never had a law to where it was illegal to criticize the government.

The Sedition Act of 1918 .Most likely your referring to the Espionage acts which made it illegal to do anything that hindered the ability of the army to recruit, perform operations, and maintain morale through spreading doubt or supporting the enemy cause. This was accompanied by the Sedition acts which made it illegal to speak ill of the government or the United States and due to its infringing upon the first amendment was later repealed but these were only during war time.

These two men had very different views on the role of the federal government , states rights and the rights of individuals to criticize the government. They were opponent in the election of 1796. Adams won and Jefferson finished second, which made him vice-president, according to the law in effect at that time. (The Law was changed soon after that.)
