Latitude lines run horizontally east and west at different distances from the equator and are called parallels, probably because they circle the earth at a constant distance from each other. We sometimes refer to certain areas by latitude as parallels. For example, A military boundary between North Korea and South Korea was set at the 38th parallel. Most of the boundary between the United States and (British) Canada was set at the 49th parallel.

longitude lines run north-south and are furthest from each other at the equator and come togegther at the poles.

Meridians of longitude do join the north and south poles, but they're not parallel, because the earth is round.

Lines of latitude -- all parallel to the equator -- can be found between the poles, but do not connect them.
