No single list of the 70,000 who served on Iwo Jima exists.
Holland "Howlin' Mad" Smith commanded the landing.
Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, PFC Franklin Sousley, PFC Rene Gagnon, PFC Ira Hayes and Navy Corpsman PM2 John Bradley are all known to have been there since Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press is known to have taken their picture at the top of Mount Suribachi.
Twenty-two Marines can be readily named from the list of Medal of Honor winners.
John Basilone who won the Medal of Honor at Guadalcanal died on Iwo Jima,
The majority of the men that fought and died on Iwo Jima were not soldiers at all. They were United States Marines, and some US Sailors (medical corpsmen). For a listing of those men, a roster of the US Marine Corps 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions under the over-all command of Marine Corps General Holland Smith must be researched. For the Japanese Forces: Army General Kuribayashi commanded the Army 109th Infantry Division, which consisted of the 2nd Independent Mixed Brigade under General Osuga; the 204th Imperial Navy CB's (Construction Battalion); Naval personnel under Admiral Ichimaru; and Japanese Tank Crewmen of the 26th Tank Regiment, commanded by Lt. Colonel Nishi. NOTE* The majority of men fighting on the island of Okinawa were US Soldiers (US Army); General Buckner's 10th Army.
The Battle of Iwo Jima occurred during the Second World War, and resulted in a victory for the United States. Thousands of soldiers were killed including Elvin Anderson, Floyd McKelvie, Jack Robinson, and Bernard Zamborsky.
Not as such. The only way to obtain a list of every Marine (and Navy Corpsman) who served on Iwo Jima would be to start with every USMC battalion who fought on "Sulphur Island"(the Japanese name for Iwo) and see what records might be available in the Marine Corps Archives.
