It usually means that your alternator (or generator) is not charging the battery. At this point you need to check system voltage with a voltmeter when the engine is running. You should see at least 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it is less than that, it is not charging. You can also have the charging checked at a repair shop if you don't have a voltmeter.
with the vehicle running, take a volt meter turned to measure volts and place one lead on each battery post; if the charging system is operating properly, the voltmeter should read between 14 and 15 volts

The alternator may be failing. Drive to your local auto parts store and they can test the charging system for you for zip.
If by charging system you mean battery light then check your battery. It might be dying (or dead). Chances are your car is low on power. Either check and refill the battery with electrolyte (distilled water) or buy a new one. Also, your alternator could be dying. Check that with a test light or a voltmeter.
