two quarts of 75w90 gear oil.
It sounds like the Cabriolet has a possible problem with the shifter forks. The transmission will need to be pulled apart to see what the problem is for sure.
If it is an automatic transmission, the speed of the engine (in rpm) is what makes the gears change. Accelerate too much and it will fly up through the gearbox when it is not supposed to. If it is a manual transmission, the gears shouldn't change without the clutch being depressed and you manually changing gear; at most, it will simply disengage and cease turning the wheels.
an automatic transmission shifts through the 4 or 5 gears for you as you accelerate. a manual transmission must be shifted by hand using a shifter and a clutch (located next to the left of the brake pad).
i need a owner manual 91 vw cabriolet convertible
EURO: 4.5s manual, 4.7s SMG, 5.0s cabriolet US: 4.6s manual, 4.8s SMG, 5.1s cabriolet
The gears will quickly grind down to junk, and you will need a new transmission.

if its a manual yes not sure what your asking
The clutch probably just needs adjusting.
Because you have the hand break on Clutch slipping
Converting a manual transmission to automatic transmission is not possible but you can replace a manual transmission to an automativ transmission . That is also an expensive deal.
