If the starter bolts on your Mercruiser engine are broken off in the block, you'll need to remove the broken pieces carefully. Start by using a left-hand drill bit, which can sometimes extract the broken bolt as you drill. If that doesn't work, you may need to use an easy-out extractor tool, but ensure you have the proper clearance and technique to avoid damaging the block. In extreme cases, you might need to have a professional machine shop handle the extraction.
The starter bolts to the block.
Two bolts hold the starter to the block. There may also be a brace on the other end of the starter.
the starter should be on the right side of the engine block there aretwo or three bolts going into the block then the starter should come down a little but on the front of the starter there is a nut holding on wires to the starter i think they are 10mm. once the bolts are out of the block and no wires are on the front of the starter it should come out. its a 10 minute job if that
Connect it to one of the mounting bolts or the engine block. Match the size of the connector to a nearby bolt on the block.
Most likely 1/2"
Easy Petrol/ Gas: disconnect earth from battery, undo 2 wires from starter, undo two hex (allen) key bolts holding starter to block and starter is out. Diesel TD5: disconnect earth from battery, undo 2 wires from starter, undo bracket holding trans cooler lines, undo two bolts holding starter to block and undo a nut 15mm holding starter to block and starter is out.
starter is located on the side of the engine, down low and to the rear where the transmission bolts to engine block
Remove power connections from battery. Remove the wires to the starter. There are 2 bolts, one short, one long, that go from under the starter upwards. Remove these 2 bolts, loosing them each a bit at a time and holding the starter up to keep the turning easy. It is all basically a 'no-see' job, have to go by feel.
Personally, I ground off what was left of the bolts, removed the starter, ground off the rest of the bolts, then drilled a hole all the way through the ears on the bellhousing and put long nuts and bolts through it to hold the starter in. I couldn't find any other way to do it.
Label wires and take them off from the soloniod, there should be two long bolts that bolt the whole assembly to the engine block , undo the bolts and starter and solonoid come out of bellhousing and off engine block. to install repeat steps backwords
The starter on most GM product is located on the lower passenger side of the engine at the rear of the block held on by two bolts. Disconnect your battery, remove the two bolts, and drop the starter down just far enough to remove the wiring from the starter. ( it helps if you have a block or something to rest the starter on while you remove the wires so there is no tension them.) Simply reverse order.
Well is it the left side or right side.?. Most time we tighten the stater bolts again.
