Roman Catholic AnswerI used to live in Savannh, Georgia. Several friend of mine are trying to get the Georgia martyrs canonized so they were praying for a miracle. Of the Georgia martyrs, I believe that all were Spanish. Remeber that it was Spain that first discovered American (for the Europeans) and the Spanish have always been devote Catholics.

from Wikapedia:

The first Catholic missionaries were Spanish, having come with Christopher Columbus to the New World on his second voyage in 1493. They established missions in what are now Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, California, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. French colonization came later, in the early 18th century, with the French establishing missions in the Louisiana Territory districts: St. Louis, New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, the Alabamas, Natchez, Yazoo, Natchitoches, Arkansas, Illinois, and Michigan.
