It is a filter that cleans the cabin air or the fresh air from the outside before it goes through the environment unit or the a/c heating unit. this prevents 2 things, 1 dirt build up on unit it's self and cleans the air from dust thusly keeping the interior cleaner and allergins down. should be replace every time the engine air filter is replaced or serviced.
