What are two sources of genetic variation?

Natural and Artificial Selection

What is the ultimate source of genetic variation and the basis for the diversity of life on earth?

Mutations. These have quite a few different causes. Sexual reproduction is a "more recent source" {beginning 600 million years ago} of genetic variability. The process of sharing genetic information, coupled with the random crossing and mixing of genetic information during the creation of a new organism, leads to another source of genetic variability.

What are two main sources for genetic variation in a population?

Mutation and the genetic recombination in sexually reproducing organisms.

Why would shuffling genetic material to produce new combinations of characteristics be advantageous to a species and when would it be deleterious?

The key idea that outlines the effectiveness of any piece of genetic material is ultimately natural selection. If the effect of a particular piece of genetic code was beneficial to a species, the shuffling would give it a way to manifest in future generations. More importantly, if two species have genetic code that would benefit their survival when combined together, such shuffling would provide a way for the advantageous traits to emerge in future generations. The offspring that receive the trait will be more likely to flourish and live while those without will die and be replaced by more apt creatures. However, just as a combination of genetic code from two sources could be good, it could also result in some negative trait that would actually inhibit the ability of future offspring to live. Natural selection would then take these less fit members of society and slowly purge them from the gene pull after many generations. If enough members of the population are descendants with the bad genetic material however, there may not be enough to maintain a population, and the creature will go extinct giving way to more fit forms of life.

What are the sources of variation in the offspring produced by sexual reproduction?

Random assortment & crossing-over

What are the two main sources of genetic variation and which of them is more common?

The two main sources of genetic variation are sexual reproduction, and mutation. Sexual reproduction is more common.

Other sources of genetic variation in a population are?

Mutations (ubiquitous) and genetic recombination (sexual reproduction only).

What also contributes to genetic variation?

The two main sources of genetic variation are gene shuffling and mutations. A mutation is a process wherein the structure of a gene is altered.

What are some sources of variation in a population?

variations in a population can be due to sexual reproduction, gene mutations, etc

Asexual reproduction limits diversity?

asexual reproduction has a way of mutating bad genes. even beneficial mutations will become extinct if trapped along with genes that reduce the fitness of the population.

What are 2 sources of genetic variation in a population?

Any two of: Mutations Non-disjunctions during anaphase of meiosis Polyploidy Sexual reproduction e.g. crossing-over/recombination during meiosis IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE STUDYISLAND ANSWER IT IS a population whose members have many different traits

What is the primary advantage of sexual reproduction?

Sexual reproduction is more advantageous than asexual reproduction because it allows for genetic diversity. In asexual reproduction there is only one source of genetic material whereas with sexual reproduction there are two sources of genetic material.

How does gene shuffling contribute to gene variety int the gene pool?

Gene Shuffling-one of the two main sources of genetic variation(other is mutations) Gene Shuffling happens at the gametes/sex cells formation when the chromosomes line up in the middle at random during meiosis. So that means the 23 pairs of chromosomes we have can produce 8.4 million different combinations of genes. Think of it as to playing cards. Each card represents an allele/trait. When you shuffle the cards, it leads to many different hands(poker) you can obtain. I hope my horrible explanation helps.

What two sources do genetic variation in living things include?

mutation in the DNA order and sexual reproduction of the favorable animal in the ecosystem.

What are the 3 sources of genetic variation?

Crossing over of sister chromatids in prophase 1 of meiosis, independent assortment along the metaphase plate in metaphase 1 of meiosis. Not sure what a third one is.-------------------------------------------------------------------There are more actually 4 causes that cause genetic variety even though mainstream high school biology only discusses the three main ones: Crossing over, independent assortment (which happen during sexual reproduction), and, random genetic mutations. The 4th one is gene transfer. Species transfer genes between them.
