If your car stalls when it reaches normal operating temperature, you might have a problem with your distributor coil. You could also have an issue with the fuel filter since you ran out of gas recently.

Since it is front wheel drive, there isn't one that you can change.
When you say sand, I take it you mean in the sand filter. Yes, normally change the sand or clean the DE filter when we change the liner since it most likely has been some time since it was changed..
The oil pump is located where the oil filter screws on. Take the oil filter off and there are three or four bolts. you will see it when you get the filter off. has been a while since I change one.
Since you have to drop the pan in order to change the filter, follow the instructions in the "Related Question" below...
you have to drop the entire pan since there is no plug and you might as well change the filter and gasket while you have it off

Sounds like a plugged fuel filter. If more than 50,000 miles since it was changed, change it. Change the air filter. Also check all vacuum hoses.
check your cables/ wires and change you transmition fluid and filter. i wiggeled a wire to my transmition and it hasn't done it since, but its only been three weeks. good luck!!
