Replace the distributor cap it is either cracked or worn out. While you are at it replace the plug wires since they are probably not in much better shape. Be sure and lube the inside of the plug boots with dielectic grease on both ends of the wires. your local parts store can supply you with everything mentioned.

Yes, it should be located towards the back of the block, and can be identified by the ignition wires coming off of the distributor cap.

The pickup coil in the distributor? !976 should be an HEI distributor. Take the cap off, unplug the wires going to the distributor, remove the rotor and the pickup coil is under the rotor and held in place with two screws.
Spark plugs, distributor cap, and distributor rotor should be replaced. Ignition coil should be checked for corrosion at the post. Clean or replace as needed. Spark plug wires should be inspected for corrosion. Clean or replace as needed. PCV valve should be cleaned. Fuel filter should be relaced. Air filter should be inspected and replaced if needed. Oil and filter should be changed if applicable.
The distributor has only one plug and one screw. You should note the position of the adjustment slot and the exact position of the rotor, and make sure the new one is put in exactly the same.
