here is how I did it - I built a box out of wood big enough to cover the skimmer area . I built mine out of scrap wood. I then covered the edges of the box with foam window seal to give it a good seal. Place the box over the skimmer area. When you start you will only lose the water inside the box and the water pressure will seal the area. Replace skimmer, remove box.

Yes possibly In reality, the skimmer will not cause a leak. What causes leaks are people who do not connect or glue the fittings to the skimmer properly. Or ground movement like earthquakes. k
In ground pool when filled up and pump running water is leaking somewhere but will stop after it is under the skimmer could someone please tell what might be wrong?
Best guess is that there is a leak in the return pipe from the skimmer to the pump. Sorry to say its probly not a cheap fix. There also could be a leak at the gasket around the skimmer opening.

No you just have to get the water level below the skimmer after that you should have no trouble making repairs.

YES THERE IS A LOT OF TRASH THAT CAN GET IN THE VALVE TO MAKE IT LEAK. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO CLEAN IT FURTHER I found that with the pump running, the pool water was rising as apparently the pump was pulling water out of the ground. This was with the pool water low and the skimmer plugged off in order to try to filter after a bad storm. When I shut off the pump, the pool water went down as the valve did not seat properly.

Check you water level. It sounds like you have too much water in your pool. When your pump is running, it is "sucking" water through the skimmer, keeping the water level pulled down inside of the skimmer. When you turn the pump off, the water level pushes back up, causing the skimmer lid to come off.BETTER ANSWER::Totally opposite of the above answer. If the water level is at or below the throat of the skimmer then yes the pool water can vortex in that skimmer causing air to be sucked into the pump. The skimmer basket keeps popping up because of the entrapped air. It has nowhere to go except back to the pool in the direction of least resistance when the pump shuts off. Bring and keep the water at mid level or slightly higher. Add fill water when the water gets to within about one inch of the bottom of the skimmer. Another reason would be that you have an actual suction leak. Suctions leaks are found in the plumbing and/or pump back to the pool on the suction side of the pump. Sometimes the pump seal can leak and cause this. Check under the base of the pump at a place between the pump basket or pot and the motor. If damp, that may be the cause of the air. The air gets into the filter tank then backs up to the pool at the skimmer.K
How can you vacuum the bottom of an above ground pool out with out losing the water?
If you have the regular set up that includes a skimmer, pump and filter then you don't have to waste any water. Get an lid-to-hose adapter, that fits over the skimmer basket at your pool supply store. Fill the hose with water and attach it to the lid. Are you lossing a lot of water? Do you use any type pool cleaner that attached into the skimmer that bounces on the pool floor? If you do and the base is poolcrete is being better down.. and THAT could cause a hole... You may or may not have a leak but the sunken area is caused by the collapse of the sand or ground under that area of the pool allowing the liner to fill in the hole created by that collapse.
