I had the same problem.
Removed lock mechanism, cleaned, oiled and replaced. A fiddly job as bits fell off - it had seen better days. Once all back together it locks if I do the following:
Get out. Close door. Lock door. Open door. Close door.
mine does this in cold weather just climb in other door, i have to!
Between £25 and £70 for a door from a scrapyard or ebay and an hour or two of your time.

Weird, you should probably take it to a mechanic.
32 lbs fot mk 1 diesel PS it is on the side of the drivers door near the lock catch
Might just need lubrication like WD40 or graphite.
push they key in further !
Look for the fuse board, under the dash between the steering column and the drivers door. The unit that the fuses plug into is the BSI. Have fun!
Drivers door open Ignition off Switch ignition On then Off Close then Open drivers door twice Switch ignition On then Off Close then Open drivers door twice Close doors and lock using manual knob Switch ignition On then Off Twice Unlock using manual knob Passenger door lock and unlock I waited a few seconds for everything to settle, then everything worked.

Disconnet the battery overnight in case the ecu has a back up. Reconnect it in the morning open the drivers door if you hear a beep its reset itself.
