Historical Western thought is that there are only 3 branches of government, as noted above, though some of the powers of each branch may in fact be assigned to different parts of the government.

However, there also have been other proposals which included other branches, or broke the above branches apart. Most commonly, here are other "branches" of government:

• Military - the branch of government responsible for protection of the country from outside forces
• Religious - in certain forms of government, religion supplements the traditional three, particularly the Judicial Branch. Commonly, there is a system of Religious Courts, parallel to the "normal" Courts. In essence, the jobs of the Judicial branch are split apart by topic, with each Court system having exclusive say over its area of responsibility
• Legal - in some proposals, law enforcement and law creation belong to the same branch. That is, there is one branch which both passes the laws and enforces the laws.
