Synpropanethial-S-Oxide.
Onion:When we cut onion 2 chemicals like sulfoxides and enzymes to form gas when this gas reach our eye it makes cry now usually to avoid crying we wash the onion then we see crying chemicals if we make next onion we will wear goggles to protect our eyes thus gas do not reach our eyes.
All sorts of things happen when one cuts an onion and in the end Sulfenic Acid comes out. That turns into another gas and it causes the eyes and nose to run and try to get rid of the gas.
All onions make you cry, because when you cut them, the enzymes inside combine to make a gas that wafts up from the onion. When the gas touches the water in your eyes, it forms sulfuric acid, which is what makes your eyes cry in order to wash the irritant away. You can avoid this by cutting the onion under water, or chilling it.

I know it is a little late but,... ther is a gas inside the onions that is let off when you cut into them. This gas irritates your eyes. To prevent this, you could look silly and do it the hard way by wearing goggles, but the best way is to cookl by an open flame, like if you have a gas oven. The heat sucks in the gas from the onion and makes it so it does not go airborn. Hope this helps.
Flatulence. See the related link for more information.Flatulence is the condition of farting. The gas that comes out is flatus.Flatulence, Flatus
A cut onion releases an irritant into the air which irritates our eyes, the body's response in turn is to try to get rid of the irritant through the production of tears. You can try one of two things to have your eyes water less when cutting onions...one is to cut your onion under a stream of water from your tap, the other is to not cut the end of the onion that has the roots on it...this will result in less irritant being released. kutay
No... just your nose.
The volatile oils are unable to escape, so peeling and cutting are more comfortable. There is no need to freeze an onion, though; just keep them in plastic in the crisper drawer of your fridge; they won't make it smell oniony and will always be easy to cut up.
Could be many reasons but a dirty/plugged fuel filter comes to my mind first.
It its the gas that the onion releases that reach our eyes and start irritation. Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes' lachrymal glands so they release tears. Also, the irritation to your nose causes some of the tearing as well. To prevent this Cut your onions Cold, Under Running Water, Submerged in water or avoiding to cut the root as that releases most of the gas. Or some people say to chew some mint gum to prevent those tears!
