Barack Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, received a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaii. Her work with cottage textile industries in Indonesia has attracted newfound attention since Obama's presidency began.

Barack Obama, Sr., also received a B.A. at the University of Hawaii (in economics). He was the university's first African student. He met Dunham in a Russian-language class in 1960, and they were married shortly afterward.
