It's because of daylight savings time. Each time, because it usually gets darker in the afternoon, people would have to set their clocks back, so that the working environment to the country can continue and be more precised.

Do you really gain 1 hour of sleep with the clocks go back on Nov 2?

It is unlikely that anyone who normally wakes at a regular time would sleep for an extra hour when the clock goes back. We do gain an hour on the day it happens. In Great Britain and Ireland our clocks went back last weekend, on Sunday morning, at 2:00 a.m. That day had 25 hours in it, as there were officially two distinct time periods between 1:00 a.m and 2:00 a.m. This hour compensates for the hour lost on a Sunday in April when the clocks went forward from 2:00 a.m to 3:00 a.m.

Do you gain an extra hour of sleep when you turn your clock back an hour?

Maybe, if the possibility of clocks going back ever happens, but it depends, maybe what you did would come back too, for example, your sleeping, and you set your clock to go back, but then the time goes backwards, and when you wake up, you are in math class. So I suggest you take what you have, its better than nothing.

Do the clocks go forward or back tonight?

You loose an hour when clocks go forward. For example if you get up every day at 6am, after the clock change it really will be like getting up at 5am. You lost 1 hour at 2am, it will probably be darker where you are now in the morning. On the bright side of things, we get an extra hour of daylight.

What does the English summer time mean?

"Summertime" in Europe is similar to what we call "Daylight Saving Time" in North America. Basically, an hour of daylight is shifted from the early morning to the evening, giving the appearance of an additional hour of daylight. In Europe, "Summertime" begins on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday in October. Unlike the United States where we change our clocks when it's 2:00 AM in our own time zone, every time zone in Europe (that observes "Summertime") makes the change at the same time - 1:00 AM UTC (or Greenwich Mean Time). thanks to webexhibits.org for the info.Kent builder William willet noticed that day light hours were being lost whilst people were sleeping. He first lobbied with the government in 1907 but it was not until 1916 that the clocks were brought forward an hour.

Why do clocks flash 1200?

Clocks will flash 12:00 when their power supply has been lost, and they have no memory of the correct time. I'm not sure why 12:00 AM was chosen as opposed to some other time, but it is convenient. If you have set your alarm to go off at 6:30 am, but the power goes off, you will be woken up as soon as it is restored, where you can quickly reset the time and go back to sleep.

In summer the clocks?

In many of the world's civilized nations, as well as in the United States also too, clocks are advanced one hour at some point in the Spring ... for example, if you make the change when the clock reaches 1:23, then you adjust Mickey's hour hand so that the clock reads 2:23. Clocks then remain in that condition until some point in the Autumn. During this portion of the year, human activities continue at their regularly scheduled times, as if the clocks had not been changed. Effects of the change include: -- Having lost an hour of sleep on the night of the change, everyone feels uncomfortable for several days after. Some may not feel normal again until the Fall. -- Daylight appears to arrive an hour later in the morning, and appears to persist an hour longer in the evening, allowing for more family outdoor recreation in the evening, before dark. There have been reports that lawns burn and shrivel and dairy cattle become confused and disoriented during this period of time, because of the 'increased daylight'. There is no credible scientific evidence to support these claims. Indeed, scientific data collected by means of accurately calibrated measurement equipment indicate that there is in fact no increase in the duration of daylight, except for the increase due to the inclination of the earth's axis, in combination with its orbital motion. It is as if the sun is totally unaware that humanity has changed its clocks !
