McCain received votes from about 55.6% of White voters.
If McCain received 58,343,671 votes (CNN?) and 52,431,522 of his votes were from Whites, that's also 90% of his base and 41.4% of those voting. Likewise 10% of his base were 'not White' voters, 5% of the 2008 Electorate.
White McCain voters are presumably 23% of the 'Over 18 US population' (which includes illegal aliens, Permanent Residents & non-voters.) When you read that "24% of Americans think George Bush is doing a good job" (December 08) and "15.5% have an unfavorable view of Barack Obama" (2/1/09 FoxNews) & 10.9% 'Don't Know,' it's more-or-less THAT same 25%. Among these Whites voting McCain and non-voting Bush-loving Whites we find some racists.
While other reasons drew McCain voters, White racism was definitely a factor in the McCain vote. What percentage of McCain voters are hardcore racists? Unknown, but 7% of White voters (R,D,I) admitted race was important; that was at least 12% of the McCain vote. By party affiliation: 14% of White Democrats voted McCain (8% of his base), a defection that's actually pretty low (if there's no Bradley effect in that poll.) At 18% of the White McCain vote, 'somewhat racist' Independents were perhaps 18% of his White base and 2/3rds his White Independent vote. At least 16% of his White Vote was racist Republican... in total, a whopping 42% of the White McCain voters may have been racist to some degree. Co-incidentally, that number is close to the 15% of ALL voters who believed "Obama is a Muslim!" To his credit, McCain disavowed that nonsense. Even Republican pollsters have admitted that 15% of all white voters are racist, and that's probably just the hardcore wedge ("I'll never vote for a Black Candidate!") But there aren't enough White racists to elect a President.

If considering this is too depressing, cheer up: millions of other White racists 'got over it' this time & actually voted for Barack Obama (or didnt vote 'against the Black guy') and this untold fact probably made the difference in at least two Southern swing states. That's the real shocker, and hope for change too.
