I assume you're asking about doing your own oil change. You need to jack the bike slightly to get it high enough to reach under and get the oil filter off of it. It is at the back of the engine, between the frame rails and pointing at the rear tire.
One issue is that Honda suggests warming the bike before the oil change, something that results in some hot metal while you're fooling around under there.
The oil filter does not have to be an expensive piece. Fram makes a replacement filter that, last time I bought one at a Walmart (of all places) runs you less than $6.00. But, a major issue can result from how tightly the previous filter was screwed onto the motor. There is not a lot of working room. I was able to use a small strap wrench because a filter wrench was just too big to squeeze in the tight space.
Oil drain is also on the left side of the motor, another tight fit right behind the frame. It can be a real knuck-buster when it breaks loose.
The oil capacity of the Honda Shadow VLX 600 is 2.1 liters. There will be a little more oil required to fill the oil filter at the oil change.
I have a 1999 Shadow 600 VLX, shouldn't be any different than yours, oil capacity is 2.38 quarts if you drain and change oil filter.
About four quarts with a filter change.
2.8 liters without a filter change, 3 liters with a new oil filter.
2.7 quarts, 2.9 quarts with a filter change.
It takes 2.5 quarts without a filter change.
