You basically just reverse the charger's leads, attaching the positive lead to the `ground side' (chassis) and the negative lead to the negative connection on the battery. I'm assuming of course that you're referring to a British made automobile.

Why did automakers initially use a positive ground system?

BEcause the electricity actually runs from The Negative side of the battery to the Positive. Electrical charge is a "Negative" charge. But the layman thought that sounded wrong and eventually even the english gave in and went to Negative ground systems.

Is your 1996 suburban battery a positive or negative ground?

The Suburban has a negative ground system.

Is the battery on a 1983 380sl a positive ground?

I doubt it but I am not 100% sure. It is unlikely in 1983 BMW was using a positive ground system. You can easily find out. Trace the negative battery cable and see where it goes. It is is attached to ground then it is a negative ground system.

How do you hook the battery charger on a positive ground system?

Connect the positive clip of the charger onto the positive post of the dead battery. If the battery is located inside of a vehicle, connect the positive charger clip to a grounded surface--like an engine block--on the vehicle.

How do you keep everything set when removing battery on 2008 Chevy Malibu?

I connect a spare battery to the system with jumper wires, positive to an accessory post on the vehicle and the ground to a good engine ground. Keep in mind the vehicles positive battery cable will be hot even after the vehicles battery is removed.

How do you stop the battieriess from reversing polarities when the batteries are in series?

In a negative ground system, hook the vehicle ground (frame) to the negative of the first battery, positive of that battery to negative of second battery and the positive of the second battery back to vehicle positive. ( starter or starter solenoid) If you are hooking 2 12 volt batteries in series you will have 24 volts.

Do you connect the ground cable first on a car with a positive ground system when installing a battery?

No, the ground cable gets always disconnected first and connected last, regardless of ground polarity.

What causes a car electrical system to shut down?

A major short circuit, disconnection of one of the three main wires (alternator to battery positive, battery negative to ground, engine block to ground).

Where does the positive battery cable go on a 1930 ford?

Prior to 1956 Ford used a Positive ground system. So, if your vehicle iss still original and unaltered, it should go to ground/ the frame.

How do you wire two 12 volt batteris to get plus 12 volts and minus 12 volts?

You can wire two 12 volt batteries in series... Connect negative of the first battery to positive of the second battery. That common connection becomes ground. The positive of the first battery becomes +12, and the negative of the second battery becomes -12. However, do not expect to be able to charge the second battery in a system designed for only one battery, such as in an automobile.

Is the positive post on a car battery the ground?

Vehicle Electrical System GroundingFor MOST automotive electrical systems, NO, the positive battery terminal is NOT the ground. In most vehicular electrical systems the positive terminal is the "HOT" terminal, not the ground. The NEGATIVE TERMINAL IS ESTABLISHED/USED AS GROUND, in almost all vehicles. It is important to note that there are occasionally some exceptions to this standard, and you need to determine which grounding system is used on any vehicle BEFORE messing around with the electrical system.
