It's the same as on any other car. If it's starting to go, you may notice a drop in RPMs below normal, when slowing. When you go to start it, it may not want to at first and may seem like the battery is going dead. Lastly, at night, when you turn your headlights on, if anything dims greatly, or lights lightly pulsate, these are all signs. The best thing to do is to take it up to an Autozone or something like that and get a battery and alternator test.
the above paragraph is wrong..... I'm a cougar owner. the quick alternator test does not work on these cars however the car does give you enough warning with the battery light about a day or 2. you know its going bad when the battery light turns one past around 3k rpms it has happend to me 3 times..... do not use the crappy alternator, buy an Ford one the last so much longer and the same price off of the duralast (Autozone) go to this website teamfordparts.com the service is excellent. also i recommend you join
