The first Inauguration Day occurred on April 30, 1789, when the newly elected President of the United States, George Washington, gave the first inaugural address. There is no constitutional requirement for a president to do so, but all succeeding presidents have followed Washington's example.
Washington arrived in New York on a velvet lined barge and landing to applause. The inauguration took place on Thursday, April 30 1789 with Washington arriving in a canary yellow carriage pulled by 6 white horses and followed by a long column of New York militia in full dress. All work stopped in the city and crowds lined the streets. The newspaper the Gazette of the United States wrote, "Many persons in the crowd were heard to say they should now die contented nothing being wanted to completed their happiness by the sight of the savior of his country."
