You actually have 2 kings.D. João II and D.Manuel I.
They both had important roles on the portuguese discoveries.

It was D.João II who sent all the sailors to find new lands such as Vasco da Gama to find the sea route to India or Pedro Alvares Cabral to find Brazil.

D.Manuel was the sucessor of D.João II and had an important role in also finding new lands but in maintaining the conquered ones.He ordered that all the scholars should work in order to help the nation advance wich they did.

In the time of his rule Portugal had the most powerful and most advanced armada, wich some scholars said to have more than 3.000 ships, the biggest economy, the most advanced army, and it was considered the richest and most powerful nation on earth.

Prince Henry the Navigator. He wasn't the ruler of Portugal, however. He was the younger son and later, the younger brother of two successive Kings of Portugal.
