President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, that stated the slaves in the states that were still fighting the Union were to be freed. The Southern plantation owners thought is was an open attack on their way of life.
In January of 1863, President Lincoln issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation, which freed America's slaves. In November of that same year, he gave a public speech (the Gettysburg Address) which inspired all opponents of slavery to recommit themselves to bringing the war against the slave-holding South to a successful (though not vengeful) conclusion.
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863 by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The proclamation declared the freedom of 3 million slaves.
Southern slaves during the war went from liabilities to assets. When the north were taking the south out, the south realized they had way more slaves, than anything else left. They started putting the slaves out there to do battle, and keep the south in the fight....imagine that? The north is opposed to slavery, and the Africans are the slaves in the south, and fighting the north to keep things the way the were....President Lincoln got wind of who the north was truly fighting, and signed the Emancipation Proclamation, to make the southern slaves have no reason to fight, but get out of the way, so he could figure out a way to keep that union together. Many were able to flee to the North during the chaos and fog of battle. In addition, many then joined the ranks of the Northern military to help defeat the Confederacy.
As late as the US Grant presidency, the idea of buying the Dominican Republic as a homeland for freed American slaves was one of Grant's ideas to solve the American race problem.
