One of the best ways that you can prevent becoming infected with a virus, is to install Antivirus software. It is equally important to keep the software updated, as sometimes new viruses cannot be detected with old software or old antivirus definitions.

Avira and Avast both offer good free anti-virus applications. You should also download some anti malware protectors like Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware, Spyware Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster and install a good firewall since malware is more of a problem than viruses. These are all free and come highly recommended. Remember to update everything regularly and run a full scan at least once a week.

Avoid peer-to-peer sharing networks since they are often riddled with malware and viruses. Don't download anything you haven't checked out first, don't click on links in IM unless you know who is sending them to you, don't open e mail attachments or click on links in an e mail without pre-scanning them.

Stay away from adult sites and warez sites and never, ever click on any pop-ups that tell you they will scan your computer for free. What they will do is add spyware and malware to your computer.

Invest in a Anti-Virus software, don't download things you don't need, don't view adult webpages, don't click on Ads such as: "you are the 999,999th visitor, click here you claim your prize!", and be careful of mistyping a URL such as goggle instead of Google, as some viruses use those typing errors to get you.

Its always good to have an antivirus, and firewall, always on. Kaspersky internet SEcurity 2010 is very good, and so is malwarebytes or SpyWareBlAster
