Programs to talk over the internet are easy to find when you look for them, if you mean audio/video based (webcam and mic) then you need a program like Skype which is free to use and very powerful yet simple. This sounds confusing but perhaps the other programs you are referring to are 'broken'. If you can access the internet on Firefox, you should be able to access the internet on all internet-based programs (especially other internet browsers such as Internet Explorer or Google Chrome).
